TYRRELL HATTON WINS AT TURKISH OPEN —

England’s Tyrrell Hatton has won the Turkish Open at the fourth extra hole following a dramatic six-man play-off.

Ryder Cup player Hatton, 28, claimed the title after Austria’s Matthias Schwab missed a short par putt.

They finished under floodlights after six players had tied on 20 under par.

American Kurt Kitayama was knocked out after three holes while French duo Benjamin Hebert and Victor Perez, and South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen were eliminated at the first extra hole.

It was an incredible afternoon at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course which ended with the first six-man play-off on the European Tour since 2003.

And it needed four goes at the 18th hole, a par five of 558 yards, to decide the outcome.

Kitayama and Schwab made birdies the first time they played it and it needed a brilliant chip-in from off the green to keep Hatton alive, as the other three were knocked out.

The American had originally set the clubhouse target at 20 under, after shooting nine birdies in an eight-under 64, the joint-lowest round of the day.

The 26-year-old from California looked on course for his third European Tour win of the season as he stood over a short birdie chance at the second extra hole but his effort shaved the cup.

And his par was not enough next time as Schwab sank a brilliant putt to match Hatton’s birdie.

But there was to be no maiden win for the 24-year-old Austrian as he missed a short par putt on the fourth playing of the 18th to hand Hatton victory.

It was Hatton’s fourth European Tour title and his first since winning the Italian Open in October 2017.

RORY MCILLROY WINS AT WGC-HSBC CHAMPIONS IN SHANGHAI — KBS TD TOUR DRIVEN WOOD SHAFTS

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy has won the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai after a play-off.

The 30-year-old beat defending champion Xander Schauffele after the pair were tied at 19 under par after four rounds.

Schauffele, 26, sunk a six-foot birdie putt on the last to force the play-off with the four-time major champion.

In the first play-off hole McIlroy’s birdie was enough to secure his fourth title of the year after the American could only make par.

McIlroy, who went bogey-free over the final two rounds, could only par on the 18th in round four after a poor drive and missed a 25-footer to take an outright victory at Sheshan International.

“I got lucky in regulation not to go in the water and then it was a relief to hit those two shots in the play-off,” McIlroy said of his approach in the play-off, after winning his 26th worldwide title.

He added: “It was a perfect [yardage] for a four-iron back into the wind a little bit.

“You’ve got to take everything else out of the equation and just hit the shot.”

American Schauffele, who would have been the first player to retain the title had he won, started the day two shots back but a final-round six-under 66 brought him level with the world number two.

However, after being unable to match McIlroy in the play-off he admitted: “When he’s on, I’d say he’s arguably the best player in the world.”

South African Louis Oosthuizen’s fourth round 69 was enough to secure him third place, two shots behind the leaders.

England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick, who led after the second round, had a mixed Sunday which included an eagle, two birdies and three bogeys to finish on 14 under and fifth on the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Victor Perez, Matthias Schwab and Abraham Ancer finished tied for fourth on 15 under.

TIGER WOODS WINS AT ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP

Tiger Woods equalled the PGA Tour record of 82 tournament wins with victory at the Zozo Championship.

The 43-year-old world number 10 had seven holes to finish in Japan on Monday as he matched fellow American Sam Snead’s record, set in 1965.

It was his first event since having his fifth knee operation nine weeks ago.

In April, Woods won his first major for 11 years with victory at the Masters, leaving him three short of Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles.

Snead was aged 52 when he won for the final time on the PGA Tour, while Nicklaus was 46 when he lifted the last of his major trophies.

After his record-equalling victory, Woods said: “As far as playing until 52, I hope that’s the case.

“If you would have asked me a few years ago, I would have given you a different answer, but certainly the future looks brighter than it has.

“The body can’t do what it used to but I can still think my way around the golf course.

“I know how to play and I was able to do that this week. There was a time if I didn’t know if I would play again so I am very appreciative.”

NICOLAS COLSEARTS WINS AT OPEN DE FRANCE

Former Ryder Cup player Nicolas Colsaerts has won his first title since 2012 at the Open de France.

Despite carding a one-over-par 72 in the final round at Le Golf National, the Belgian finished one shot ahead of Denmark’s Joachim B. Hansen.

Colsaerts began the week 114th on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and in danger of losing his card.

“I’ve been coming here for I don’t know how many years, it’s been a long road, ” he told Sky Sports.

“So many people have supported me over the years, that’s why I get so emotional. I went through ups and downs for so many years now.”

Recent years for Colsaerts have been a far cry from 2012 when he was selected as a wildcard by captain Jose Maria Olazabal to be part of the European team that pulled off the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ when they came from 10-4 down to defeat the USA 14.5-13.5.

LANTO GRIFFIN WINS AT HOUSTON OPEN

The 31-year-old world number 176 carded a three-under final round of 69 for a 14-under winning total.

His victory earns him a place at next year’s US PGA Championship, Masters and Players Championship.

Compatriots Scott Harrington and Mark Hubbard, both also without a PGA title, shared second, Hubbard making an 80-foot eagle putt during his round of 69.

Griffin had a one-shot lead playing the final hole but found an awkward spot in the rough with his drive.

He made the edge of the green with his second, 59 feet from the flag, and then holed a five-foot putt to make par and win the title.

STEPHANIE MEADOW RETAINS LPGA TOUR CARD AT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA CLASSIC

Meadow, 27, birdied her final two holes at the tournament in Texas to secure her playing privileges for next season.

That included a 25-foot putt on the last that meant the Jordanstown native finished in a tie for sixth, eight shots behind winner Cheyenne Knight.

Meadow, needing to finish in the top 100, was 99th on the money list.

Having made a fast start to the week with an opening round of 63, Meadow faded slightly following rounds of 71 and 73.

She started Sunday with back-to-back birdies and, though a bogey at the fifth temporarily halted her momentum, further birdies at the ninth and 13th put her in a strong position.

Although her eagle putt on the 17th slid by, she made birdie and backed it up with another on the final hole to card a four-under 67 to finish on 10 under par.

Meadow punched the air in delight as her birdie putt on the 18th dropped into the hole.

Knight shot a five-under-par 66 on the last day to clinch her first LPGA Tour event on 18 under.

England’s Georgia Hall also shot a final round of 66 to finish in a tie for fourth.

VICTOR PEREZ WINS HIS MAIDEN TOUR EVENT AT ST ANDREWS

Rookie Victor Perez says his maiden European Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship has “proved” he can “do it at this level”.

Dundee-based Perez, 27, claimed first place in his 29th appearance after posting a final-round 70 at St Andrews.

He narrowly missed his 12-foot birdie putt at the last but a close-range par was good enough to see him win by one shot to edge out England’s Matthew Southgate.

“It’s a huge win,” said Perez.

Southgate finished alone in second on 21 under after he also parred the last.

EUROPE WINS SOLHEIM CUP

There was so much to celebrate in a dramatic European Solheim Cup victory that generated iconic golfing memories that will last a lifetime.

As the Scottish sun shone and Suzann Pettersen cast a lengthy shadow on Gleneagles’ 18th green before holing the winning putt, the sport could not have asked for a better climax.

Here was a stand-alone women’s sporting event that had generated huge crowds and those 90,000 spectators were rewarded with genuine, spine-tingling sporting drama.

This thrilling denouement sits alongside those we remember in Ryder Cups at Medinah (2012), Oak Hill (1995) and Kiawah Island (1991) as well as the Solheim victory at Killeen Castle in 2011.

Paul Casey won his first European Tour title for five years with a one-stroke victory at the Porsche European Open.

Casey shot a six-under 66 in Hamburg to finish ahead of Scotland’s Bob MacIntyre, German Bernd Ritthammer and Matthias Schwab of Austria.

It was a second victory of 2019 for the 42-year-old after success at the Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour.

It was a third second of the year for MacIntyre, 23, as he seeks his maiden win on tour.

Casey began the final round one shot behind joint leaders MacIntyre and Ritthammer, but he produced a flawless round of six birdies and not a single bogey.

DGI Weekly Update 02.09.2019

SEBASTIEN SODERBERG WINS EUROPEAN MASTERS

Sweden’s Sebastian Soderberg held his nerve to claim his first European Tour title in a dramatic five-way play-off at the European Masters in Switzerland.

Soderberg, 28, finished tied at 14 under alongside Rory McIlroy, Lorenzo Gagli, Kalle Samooja and overnight leader Andres Romero following Sunday’s final round at Crans-sur-Sierre.

The Swede then birdied the first play-off hole to win the red jacket.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood finished on 12 under in a tie for eighth.

Following his victory, Soderberg said: “It’s unbelievable. I’ve dreamt of playing on the European Tour – even better doing it this way.

“I was more nervous in the beginning than I was towards the back nine. I got on a good run and the ball kept going in. Just playing with Rory, so many people around, playing with a guy like that adds heat to it right away.

“I proved to myself that I can play out here. I didn’t really know that I was ready to win, I had a terrible start to the season and I felt like I was just trying to make my way into the top 110 and keep my card for next year. It’s just a surreal way to do it.”

DGI Weekly Update 27.08.19

RORY MCILORY WINS TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy won the Tour Championship for a second time to secure the FedEx Cup title.

McIlroy, 30, carded a final-round 66 to finish on 18 under par, four shots clear of second-placed Xander Schauffele and five ahead of third-round leader and world number one Brooks Koepka in Atlanta.

He pockets $15m (£12.2m) – a prize fund he has previously questioned.

“To play like that alongside Brooks and win, it’s awesome,” said McIlroy.

The world number two, who was beaten by Tiger Woods during the final round of the 2018 Tour Championship and succumbed to Koepka on the last day of the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational last month, added: “I didn’t enjoy that walk last year like everyone else did, I played terribly.

“Going up against the number one player in the world today, he got one over on me in Memphis and I wanted to sort of try to get some revenge today.

“It’s amazing how different things can be in a year.”

American Koepka had held a one-shot lead after a weather-delayed third round at East Lake Golf Club, during which six people were injured after two lightning strikes.

But he hit a double bogey on the seventh hole and carded three further bogeys on the back nine to finish in a tie for third with compatriot Justin Thomas.

England’s Paul Casey finished fifth on nine under par, while compatriot Tommy Fleetwood finished tied 16th on one under.

DGI Weekly Update 19.08.2019

JUSTIM THOMAS WINS BMW CHAMPIONSHIP

American Justin Thomas claimed the BMW Championship by three shots at Medinah.

Overnight leader Thomas, who set a new course record with a third-round 61, closed with a 68 to finish 25 under.

Fellow American Patrick Cantlay was his nearest rival on 22 under while Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shot his second 63 of the week to finish two further back.

Tiger Woods finished on seven under and will not defend his title at next week’s season-ending Tour Championship after missing out on the 30-man field.

Only the top 30 on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup points list are eligible to play at East Lake in Atlanta.

In order to qualify, Woods – who has struggled with injury and form since claiming his 15th major at the Masters in April – needed to finish 11th or higher at Medinah, but was tied for 37th after a closing 72.

“Last year culminated in a pretty special moment for me and it would’ve been nice to go back there,” Woods said. “But I’ll be watching the guys on TV.”

Thomas now leads the points standings after a 10th PGA Tour victory that was secured thanks to four birdies on the back nine.

PATRICK REED WINS THE NORTHERN TRUST

Overnight leader Patrick Reed held off the challenge of Mexico’s Abraham Ancer to win The Northern Trust by a shot in New Jersey.

Reed began the day one shot ahead of Ancer and both hit a two-under-par 69, with the American finishing on 16 under for the tournament.

Australia’s Adam Scott shot the round of the day – a six-under-par 65 – to finish three shots back on 13 under.

England’s Ian Poulter and Justin Rose ended on 11 under but fellow countryman Danny Willett, who began the day three shots behind Reed, shot a four-over-par 75 to slip out of contention.

HINAKO SHIBUNO WINS WOMEN’S BRITISH OPEN

Japan’s Hinako Shibuno birdied the last hole to clinch a stunning win in the Women’s British Open at Woburn.

Shibuno, 20, led by two shots overnight but was soon caught by USA’s Lizette Salas in a thrilling final round.

Salas fired the week’s lowest round – a seven-under-par 65 – but Shibuno had five birdies on the back nine to win by one shot in her first major.

England’s Charley Hull and Bronte Law slipped out of contention with rounds of four and six over respectively.

OPEN PREDICTOR QUIZ 2019 RESULT — SHANE LOWRY WINS AT PORTRUSH

Peter Qvarfordt, from Sweden, won our Open Predictor Quiz this weekend by successfully picking both Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood (scoring 350 points) to win the Wishon Mystery Prize.

A huge champion of the Wishon brand, Peter runs Wilprod, our main Wishon distributors in Scandinavia. We’ll discuss what mystery prize Peter wants as he stocks most Wishon items.

In second place was Patrick Blair, from South Carolina, who also picked Shane Lowry (along with Brooks Koepka to score 275 points) and in third place Kevin Cunniffe, from County Galway in Ireland, on 250 points. They both win DGI/Wishon Goody Bags.

Congratulations to Shane Lowry for his victory in the 148th Open. Little known fact that before turning pro, Lowry was the last amateur to win a European Tour event when he won the Irish Open in 2009.

SHANE LOWRY’S OPEN VICTORY

Shane Lowry says he realised a childhood dream as he claimed his first major by winning The Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

The Irishman, 32, finished on 15 under par to win by six shots from England’s Tommy Fleetwood amid a raucous atmosphere on the Dunluce Links.

Lowry was followed through wind, rain and heavy storms by thousands of fans roaring him on to lift the Claret Jug.

“I grew up holing putts to win The Open. It was always The Open,” he said.

“It’s just incredible to be sitting here with the trophy in front of me. Look at the names on it. I couldn’t believe it was happening.”

BERND WIESBERGER WINS SCOTTISH OPEN 2019

Bernd Wiesberger won the Scottish Open to secure a sixth European Tour title after beating Benjamin Hebert in a play-off at The Renaissance Club.

Overnight leader Wiesberger was two under par for the day and 22 under overall with France’s Hebert having finished with a nine-under round of 62.

But the Austrian triumphed in the third sudden death hole at the 18th.

Hebert, England’s Andrew Johnston and Italian Nino Bertasio qualify for the Open after finishing in the top 10.

But Johnston’s countryman Lee Slattery and Welshman Jamie Donaldson miss out on places at Royal Portrush after finishing one shot further behind.

Northern Ireland’s four-time major winner Rory McIlroy finished tied for 34th after a two-under 69 took him to 13 under.

Calum Hill and Scott Jamieson finished best out of the 15 home favourites, both carding five-under par rounds of 66 on Sunday to both finish on 15 under, which was a share of 26th place.

DGI Weekly Update 08.07.19

MATTHEW WOLFF WINS HIS FIRST PGA TOUR

American Matthew Wolff says his life has “changed forever” after winning a PGA Tour title in his fourth event.

The 20-year-old eagled the 18th at the 3M Open in Twin Cities in the United States, rolling in a 26-foot putt from the fringe for a one-shot win over Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa.

It means he can play on the PGA Tour until 2021, and has entry to next year’s Masters and US PGA Championship.

“It’s a really special feeling,” said Wolff, who finished on 21-under-par.

“I just proved to myself I can be out here.”

Wolff was playing in only his fourth PGA Tour event and only his third as a professional.

Of his eagle on the last, he said: “I was shaking, to be honest. A lot of my putts weren’t going in today, and I was just kind of telling myself one’s bound to drop in.

“It happened at the right time. I just gave it a chance and it went over the right spot that I pointed out. And as soon as it dropped, the tears started coming.”

He became the youngest winner on the PGA Tour since Jordan Spieth in 2013.
